Creative Learning in a Neighborhood Environment!

The Second Street Children's School Story

"We like it immensely because there are just enough boys and girls to have lots of fun and yet not so many that we can't know them all."
This comment from a l940's-era student at the school which today is the location of Second Street Children's School still captures the educational spirit of the initial enterprise. Led by the personal touch of the administrative team which includes School Director, Jenny Douglas, Manager, Kariman Pierce and Associate Director Peggy Sterner, Second Street is home to sixty students from age two and a half to six who learn joyfully each day through play and guided interaction, in a rich environment remarkably similar to a classic neighborhood backyard.

The teachers and administrative team at Second Street believe that all children deserve to have the opportunity to play, discover and explore in a safe space, where they can test their theories about the world and get tangible feedback. The skilled teachers are there to maintain the childrenŐs health and safety, but also to ask the kind of open-ended questions that encourage children to make cognitive leaps as they are ready.

Why WB Collins Early Learning Project?

Second Street School is part of the WB Collins Early Learning Project, a non-profit corporation founded in 2003 to enable the school to expand its reach to more diverse populations via scholarships (and active fund raising) and to help provide a liveable wage and benefits for its teaching staff. This is always a challenge and a work in progress.
